When i tell doubters im actually paying to work they get chocked and says there is something wrong with that. Heard so many times that I should look for a place that takes volunteers for free an that its a scam if you pay. Hmm, wildlife rescues for free in a poor country... I need a math teacher to get that together! If I wanted to volunteer for free, id had to work on a farm or something that can make profit out of my work. There is no profit in rescuing smugled animales. How could rescuecenters that strugle in the first place, afford 4-15 adoults continiously for free? 2 000 000 Idr is spent every second day on animal food. Who would found volunteers food? The same people who's criticize me paying would critisize normal donating "well the donations doesn't go to the animales, it goes to the volunteers food and keepers sellary. Dont donate"
How horrible. How horrible in general to do something good, even worse, how horrible to spend some HOLY MONEY on something good that dosnt pay back to yourself directly. It just gives you a nice experience for life, how useless.
Do you have a hobby or interest that consumes a lot of money? I have a few back in Finland. I use my money for quality food, my hobbys and traveling. Im also worried about the environment and I love animales. So then im more then happy to travel and spend a extra 1000 euros for taking care of rescued animales, i count this as one of my hobbys. I feel good and enjoy the work. So no money wasted. Im happy. Well, ofcourse i could have bought a some Indonesian childlabour made clothes to myself with that money, why didnt i think of that...?
Here at the field I can se exactly where the money goes, and i dont regret one single euro spent. First of all, what I do like is that Tasikoki have regular animalkeepers. They make sure all the animal has food and a clean environment. The animales knows the keepers and feel safe with them. Im happy to pay for their sellary.
The animales has fresh, nutrious food, right for their species, every single day. Im happy to pay for that.
There is a edu officer teaching local children and community groups about conservation of the environment, Im happy to pay for that.
They are producing tree seedlings in a nursery to support foods for the wildlife and reforestation of habitat. Im happy to pay for that.
They are part of an organisation that supports local farmers and communities with fair wages and sustainable livelihoods. Im happy to pay for that.
There is cars needed on the area to transport things etc. Im happy to pay for that.
Gears and tools are needed for the cages. New cages needs to be built all the time. Im happy to pay for that.
Volunteers get amazing, healthy, environment friendly, nutrisious vegan food every day. Im happy to pay for that.
I share a clean, safe, dorm with other nice volunteers. I feel safe as we have a secirityguard at the gate. Im happy to pay for that.
Then we have a coordinator who takes good care of the volunteers, helps us to plan and book for our free days so that we can make the most of our stay and see amazing things. She helps us as we know no Indonesian, she is our guarding angel. Im happy to pay for that.
We can play crazy Ping Pong at the guesthouse. Im happy to pay for that.
So how do you find a reliable volunteerprojekt? First of all, research, google, email, ask questions. You can also go trough a volunteercompany, for ex. globalteer.org. You pay a litle bit extra to the compny but you can be 100% sure the place is reliable. I neve used those companys, I always contact directly the head of the volunteerprogram. I found Tasikoki after googling "wildlife (or animal) rescue in Indonesia" I had never heard about Sulawesi before. Sounded exotic enough, I also relized they had a great variety of species, not only orangutans, wich was the main reason I vanted to volunter in the first place! Then i looked for their Facebook page that was frequently uppdated with pics. That made me realize its not a scam. I contacted the volunteer part of the organisation and got answers straight away. Everything seemd right. Btw, there will always be someone writing negative coments, someone who did not enjoy the project. Read the rewiews and keep in mind that didfferent people have different experiences.
Make sure that the program youre attendin is serious. Whats the goals? Do the make money or business from the animales? Do they make the animales perform? These are warning signs!
GOOD LUCK!
